I still can't get the WT depiction of Jesus out of my head. He looks like he's a spokesman for Hair Club For Men in a toga. The beard is neatly trimmed and the hair is curly but conveniently cuts off just below the ears.

Man, you just did what a lot of us wish we had the guts to do. You stood up to him and didn't flinch. I probably would have just taken the papers and tossed them later. Thanks for sharing. You brought a smile to my face.

Applying for and carrying party cards in one-party states is like having a state-issued ID anywhere else. You couldn't apply for work, receive health care benefits, pensions, or even register a birth or marriage without it. If you were found by the police without it, you'd be asking for trouble. Unlike the Mexican Army Reserve card, having a party card in Malawi did not mean you were compelled to do anything other than present the card upon demand. If Mexico went to war or even decided to call in their reserves to quell some civil uprising (a not so implausible possibility there), all those Witnesses who had the cards would have then been required to report for duty. After all, they were "trained" reservists! I think this discrepancy was due in no small part to the fact that many GB members spoke Spanish and were regular visitors to Mexican branch in addition to having friends there. With regard to Malawi, that was a small and distant remote African outpost that was better suited for them to make a political stand. They knew what would happen. Like Judge Rutherford who wouldn't budge on the flag salute issue because of the free publicity it would draw, the GB apparently sought a way to use the poor JW's of Malawi. Like the authorities who turned the Jews away as refugees during the Holocaust, the GB also bears a secondary responsibility for these murders.

Latest Study Article: Was Jephthah surprised at his daughter coming out?

The man shouldn't have made the oath, whether or not it was his own daughter or a servant girl. It's a disgusting practice regardless of what period of time he lived in. Upon finding his daughter coming out first, Jephthah should have offered up his own sorry ass in her place.
As I remember in My Book of Bible Stories, it said that he gave his daughter to Jehovah, as in sending her to the temple as a servant for the rest of her life. But the Bible specifically mentions that he offered her up as a burnt sacrifice. Maybe that's where this confusion comes from. I looked up the wiki page on it, and although most Jewish scholars insist she was sacrificed, some suggest that she was kept to a perpetual vow of celibacy.

This is Saudi Arabia, so it shouldn't be too surprising. I'm not even Muslim, but even I'd know better than to tweet insults about Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him!!!), lest a fatwa be attached to my name. We're not dealing with rational people here, and this man should have been one of the first to realize that.

Why is the Memorial so important to JWs?
by Ding inseriously.... there's a meeting where wt dogma is taught... nothing unusual there.... they pass around bread and wine and in the vast majority of khs no one at all partakes.. if anything, it is a pantomime of wt teaching that the "great crowd" of "other sheep" have no part in the blood and body of christ.. hardly something to celebrate....

Good point - I never thought of that. If only the annointed are to partake, and they alone are in communion with Christ, why do the Other Sheep have to attend? Probably in no small part due to the awkward situation of an empty KH with a bunch of organic wine and matzo bread sitting around. I should have made the argument that since the annointed represented me through Christ, then I should have been able to phone that one in. Have a good time Brother Annointed, let me know how it goes.

Letter About Reporting Limited Field Service While Busy in Other Important Activities

So in summary, we can do other "theocratic activities" as a Jehovah's Witness besides field service, but please do be informed that your lower field service hours are being noted and you're going to have some 'splaning to do. For that very reason I never took the time 'requirement' that seriously. When I first faded, the Service Overseer called me and asked for my time. I told him "zero hours, zero magazines, zero return visits, zero Bible Studies... just put a big zero underneath everything. It'll be easy to remember."

I doubt the bill really says that. The state is asking for trouble if they penalize churches for not marrying gay couples. Activists could then purposely go to every church listed in the yellow pages and demand a wedding ceremony while armed with the threat of a lawsuit for discrimination. More likely the bill provides for state recognition of same sex unions and keeps it to that. It's up to the churches to decide who they perform ceremonies for. Since there are now many churches willing to perform such a ceremony, this shouldn't be an issue. If you are gay or lesbian and the church you belong to doesn't want to perform a ceremony for you, then maybe it's time to go to a different church. Opening up religious organizations to discrimination penalties and civil lawsuits over doctrinal questions is simply poor logic.
